You have 30 Seconds
That really is it! The average persons attention must be grabbed in 30 seconds or they move on. So your first words need to call out to the part of them that says “I need to know more!!” If you are using the same phrases and headlines you're not doing your business justice! Try a few headlines for one event and take note of the one’s getting peoples attention!
There are many ways to advertise but the number one best way is still word of mouth. Getting your current clients talking about you absolutely helps to gain more clients. Offering your current clients a freebie is a way to help them, help you. Bring a friend for free day or bring a friend, and get half off for, will bring in more people and more business!
Keep in Touch
Make sure your current clients know everything you have going on. Each person that walks into your business should have an option to sign up for your newsletter! Email is one of the most effective ways to bring business in. Learning when and how to write these emails would be a class on it’s own, but don’t worry about the how just yet! Get started immediately with gathering emails if you haven’t already, this is a source of free advertising and if you are missing out, it is costing you big bucks! Give an incentive for clients to sign up in class or at your store, offer an immediate $2 off this purchase or free gift, everyone loves a freebie!
The average consumer needs to see your service or product 7- 12 times before they make a purchase! This is one of those truths most people don’t want to know as advertisers, but think of the last time you made a purchase of something big. Did you hear about it just once? Mostly likely you heard about it many times, maybe from an ad or announcement, then a friend mentioned it, you saw another ad, and discussed it with someone. You thought about it and finally saw another ad and acted upon it! So what does this mean for your advertising campaigns?
Building a Campaign
First you must build a full campaign! Create a series of emails and ads to use across all platforms. Doing this yourself is fairly simple or you can hire a student if you’re on a budget. The trick to building a great campaign is matching all the themes, you want the color scheme to stay the same throughout so it is recognizable to someone who has already seen this offer elsewhere. This assists in brand awareness and if you have a logo it should be on everything! Yes even in your emails!
Keep ads, emails and event listings short and sweet. Letting people know a few key things about the event is better than telling them everything about it. When people feel like they know everything that is going on at the event, they feel like they don’t need to go, they already know it all. Also with today’s much shorter attention span, if you are not giving away very important, life (or business) changing advise most people will not get to the end of the 3rd line never mind the end of the email!
Use tactics that worked on you. Think again of some of your purchases. What caught your eye? Building something from the ground up is time consuming. There is nothing wrong with using idea’s from big companies and favorites from services you use and share! Take a look at the ads within this website may help you get started. For instance the ads to the right, short, sweet and interesting!
Capture more leads
The 30 second rule also goes for your website! Make sure that you have an email opt-in upfront and center, they may skip reading your event section, but if you send out an email update, they might see it then! If you are using social media make sure you are offering a signup form. Social media is great but it doesn't let you choose who gets to read your latest post, when you have an email address you can choose what your potential clients get to see. Ask for business cards! When you begin talking to someone new asking what they do and for their card is a great way to keep in touch and get them asking about you!
Advertising your Campaign
Say you are about to start a new class series and would like 10 sign-ups minimum to get started. Your first action should be to create a campaign. Decide how you’re going to spread the news. This should include many forms of online and print ads. So for our example, we would first create an email campaign, a series of emails that will inform our current clients of this new series. Sending out teasers before we even get our plans set is best, announcing something new before saying what it is, will assist you in getting more attention. We would then create a social media campaign, using event sections to build excitement and to let our connections share the news. Create a print handout about the new event, that way anyone walking in can grab one, better yet place it in every bag with any purchase. Use free advertising to your advantage! Placing ads both online and off for free can be done! Placing your ad in announcement sections of media sites like, our magazine, Patch.com, wicked local, and local papers are free to some degree and can really assist in your overall visitor flow.
Going to networking events is great, but not the only way to network. Finding places that offer complimentary services is another amazing networking tool. The next time you’re out shopping at your favorite local business ask them about advertising exchanges. Perhaps you could have a flyer, business cards or gift certificates for sale in exchange for you featuring their business at your place. The opportunities are endless with this exchange, so think big! Offer a link exchange from their site to yours, a free class to advertise in their space and even a mutual discount on services can aid this new relationship.
Ask for referrals
With every class, workshop or service offered make sure there is a drop box that people can leave comments in. At the end of class ask everyone to take a moment to fill it out, and leave a box they can check off so you can use their name. This way whenever you offer the class again you can use these comments to grow more interest. Letting people know what others thought of your class builds their confidence that this is the right place for them.
This can all sound intimidating but it can actually be a lot of fun to let your creativity come out. Give things your special touch and let people feel the essence of your business by relaxing and enjoying as you build your campaign. Remember, everything your doing carries the energy you did it with, so get happy and create!
